“Why Is There Evil And Suffering”

People ask, “What about all the suffering, sickness, disease, and famine? What about all the people losing their homes because of flood, war, fire, and earthquakes?  If there is a totally good God in Heaven, He would do away with all suffering!”  Really?  How do you know that?  Furthermore, if you truly believe that, why do you still address Him when a calamity strikes?

Can any good come from suffering?  Hmmm, let’s think about that for a moment.  For example, what kind of preacher would Paul have been if he had not suffered with the thorn in the flesh?  Did any good come from Joseph’s  being cast into a pit, rejected by his own brothers, being falsely accused of adultery, and spending two years in prison even though he was innocent?  Has anyone ever benefited from the sufferings of Job?  Has any “good” come from the sufferings of Jesus?!

The great majority of suffering comes from two causes:  (1) People make wrong choices and then must suffer the consequences; (2) Many suffer from the wrong choices of others.  And we all suffer from the wrong choice Adam made (Genesis 3:17).

The greatest suffering of all will be in Hell for those who turn their back to the Gospel and the Body of Christ.  After death, all choices cease.  Many believe that the idea of eternal suffering in Hell is totally unacceptable.  However, Jesus spoke more about Hell than Heaven (e.g. Luke 12:4-5).  Was Jesus wrong?  Was Jesus ignorant of the truth about Hell?  Let’s remember:  The Law-giver determines the punishment.  We don’t determine the punishment for rejecting Christ and His church – –  God does.

The subject of why God allows so much suffering in this life is a deeply perplexing one, but let’s not forget that there is also a lot of “good” going on at the same time.  Let’s also remember there is a place where God has done away with all suffering; a place where every tear shall be wiped away; a place where there will be no more sorrow, pain, or death.  But, that place is reserved only for those who are willing to suffer with Jesus for a little while (Romans 8:17).
