“REMOVE NOT THE ANCIENT LANDMARKS”

“Remove not the ancient landmark, which thy

fathers have set”   (Proverbs 22:28).

Primarily this statement had reference to the landmark indicating the boundaries between the tribal allotments and individual family property.  In ancient times such landmarks were regarded with great respect.  For the Jews it was commanded:  “Thou shalt not remove thy neighbor’s landmark, which they of old time have set, in thine inheritance which thou shalt inherit, in the land that Jehovah thy God giveth thee to possess it.”  (Deut. 19:14).  And again:  “Cursed be he that removeth his neighbor’s landmark.”  (Deut. 27:17).

In a time when there were few fences and a landmark was sometimes only a pile of loose rocks on the ground, it would have been easy to move these had they not had great respect for them.  They recognized that it was God’s Landmark, indicating the land that God had given each of them for an inheritance.  Thus we can see and understand the importance of these landmarks.  They identified and assured the inheritance that God had provided for each of them.

We have been talking about material boundaries for a physical inheritance.  Now we want to see that in a spiritual sense God has His Landmarks.  God has promised us an inheritance:  “…an inheritance incorruptible, and undefiled, and that fadeth not away, reserved in heaven for you”  (I Peter 1:3).  Landmarks were given to show the boundaries and to identify the location of an inheritance.  What are the Landmarks that God has given that identifies the location of our inheritance ?  Is man free to move them to suit his own desires? God’s Landmark is His Word.  If any man speak, let him speak as the oracles of God.”  (I Peter 4:11).  In   Hebrews 5:12,  the substance of Christian doctrine is described as “Oracles of God”.  Man can not add to it, or subtract from it. He must  deliver it exactly as God gave it.  Since the Gospel is God’s Power to Save, (Romans 1:16), it is no wonder that He pronounced “anathema” on anyone who dared to change it.   (Galatians 1:6-8).

When the Question of Salvation arises, (“…what shall I do that I may inherit eternal life?”  Mark 10:17, man gives a lot of different answers.  He set up his own landmarks, where he, man thinks the boundary should be.  There is no way that we could list all of the answers man has given.  So rather than try to list the answers of man…just look at the “Landmarks” that God has given concerning salvation.

“And in none other is there salvation: for neither is there any other name under heaven, that is given among men wherein we must be saved”  (Acts 4:12).  To try to obtain salvation out of Christ is to remove the ancient Landmarks.  The Purpose of Landmarks was to show the boundary.  To show that you were either outside or inside a   property.  God’s Spiritual Landmarks Show Us The Boundary.  We are either  IN CHRIST…OR…OUT OF CHRIST.  God set the Landmarks.  “For ye are all sons of God, through faith, in Christ Jesus.  For as many of you as were baptized into Christ did put on Christ.”  (Gal. 3:26-27).  You are either IN CHRIST…or…OUT OF CHRIST.  Remove not the ancient landmarks!                                                                                                                                                                                                                          Frank Briscoe
