Dunkin’ Donuts is changing its name to “Donuts”

“Who Can I Trust?”

The news came out earlier this week: Dunkin’ Donuts is changing its name to “Donuts”. That’s right, just “Donuts”. On the same day Kraft food brand announced that it was teaming up with Post Cereals to bring us Fruity Pebbles Mac & Cheese. A well-known convenience store also announced that day that a new flavor of sparkling water was going to be available: “Big Bite Hot Dog Sparkling Water”.

You may be thinking, “Wow, that was a lot of big announcements to be made on one day!” Those are not the only announcements; there were others, like Scotch Brand, makers of the famous transparent tape, saying they were going to produce their own Scotch Whiskey. The list of head-turning messages from major marketers goes on.

I should add one detail I haven’t mentioned yet: That “day” on which these announcements were made was April 1. You may know that date better as “April Fools Day”, a day on which we’re given license (by someone) to play tricks on others. In each of the above cases, the marketers have no intention of actually selling what they announced. These were gimmicks to get our attention.

Lots of innocent people are taken in by such playful tricks. In most cases, there’s no harm done; everyone chuckles when they realize it was all in jest. But more and more we see people presenting things that are not true at all in an effort to scam people out of their money. In the process, trust is damaged, and we wonder, “Can I trust anyone anymore?”

The answer is Yes, you can trust God. Psalm 119:160 says it well: “The entirety of Your word is truth, and every one of Your righteous judgments endures forever.” The Bible is that “word”, and this verse claims that the Bible – all of it – is true. If true, then I can trust it in whatever it tells me.

Just days before He would be crucified, Jesus told His disciples to go to a certain place and bring a colt they would find tied up. But what if the owner tried to stop them from taking his colt? “Thus shall you say to him, ‘because the Lord has need of it.’” Luke tells us that the disciples “found it just as He had told them” (Luke 19:28-32). This incident, and others like it, taught them they could trust Jesus.

Now let’s check our own trust in Jesus. In John 5:28,29 He said this: “Do not marvel at this, for the hour is coming in which all who are in the graves will hear His voice and come forth – those who have done good to the resurrection of life, and those who have done evil, to the resurrection of condemnation.” Two incredible facts are presented there: The resurrection of the dead, and eternity in either heaven or hell. Can we trust Jesus, or is He playing a trick on us?

We can trust Jesus and God. Hebrews 11:6 tells us that this trust (“faith”) is vital: “But without faith it is impossible to please Him, for he who comes to God must believe that He is, and that He is a rewarder of those who diligently seek Him.” Trusting the Lord is what Christianity is all about.

One more question: Does the way we live our lives confirm that we believe Him?
