Are you one of the 4 FOOLS?

FOUR FOOLS

The term “fool” is a harsh sounding word.  As such we are careful in the way that we use it.  Yet there are four times that God uses the term “fool” or “foolish” to describe certain people that we need to consider.

The Greek word in the New Testament for “fool” is “Aphron”  meaning without reason, want of mental sanity and sobriety.  Another word is:  “Anoetos” which signifies not understanding, or without discernment, hence senseless.”  When God uses the term fool, or foolish to describe an individual, He is saying that such a person is without reason, or discernment.  We will look at four times that God uses such language to describe the action of man.

Fool Number One:  Psalm 14:1 and 53:1, begin by saying: “The fool hath said in his heart, There is no God.”  As David  observed the world in which we live he was caused to write:  “The heavens declare the glory of God; And the firmament showeth his handiwork.”  (Psalm 19:1).  The apostle Paul in writing to the church of God in Rome declared:  For the invisible things of him since the creation of the world are clearly seen, being perceived through the things that are made, even his everlasting power and divinity; that they may be without excuse;”  (Romans 1:20).  It is one without discernment, without reason, who can look at the world in which we live, consider man, and then say in his heart “there is no God”.

Fool Number Two:  This account is recorded for us in the twelfth chapter of Luke.  Jesus, the greatest teacher ever to walk upon the earth, is giving great messages to the people.  Imagine if you can the great lessons that He is teaching.  And as it were, an individual in the audience desires to ask Jesus a question.

The opportunity is granted, and we wait to hear the question, perhaps a question of life or death.  How will Jesus answer, what great lesson are we about to learn? Then it is with disappointment that we hear the man say:  “Teacher, bid my brother divide the inheritance with me.”  He was more interested in laying up for his physical body than in caring for his soul.  Are not many like that today?  Listen to Jesus’s answer:  “But God said unto him, Thou foolish one, this night is thy soul required of thee; and the things which thou has prepared, whose shall they be?”  One is sense less, foolish who is more interested in this life, than in the life to come.

Fool Number Three:  We read in  Galatians 3:1: “O foolish Galatians, who did bewitch you, before whose eyes Jesus Christ was openly set forth crucified?”  What had happened?  What caused the Galatians to be called “foolish”?  Look back to chapter one, beginning in verse 6:  I marvel that ye are so quickly removing from him that called you in the grace of Christ unto a different gospel; which is not another gospel only there are some that trouble you, and would pervert the gospel of Christ.  But though we, or an   angel from heaven, should preach unto you any gospel other than that which we preached unto you, let him be anathema.”   For emphasis this condemnation is repeated in the next verse.  How foolish it is that man would pervert or change the  gospel, God’s power to save (Rom. 1:16) for something man made.  But isn’t this what man is doing today?  How many gospels, perverted gospels, are being taught in the world today ?  O foolish people who did bewitch you into thinking that man, mere mortal man, could change and pervert the gospel of Christ, and still be pleasing unto God.

Fool Number Four:  Matthew chapters 5,6, and 7 contain what we call “The Sermon on the Mount”.  Jesus was teaching those things that would prepare man for the coming of Christianity,  so many things that Jesus was teaching, and would teach, that would prepare man for heaven.  Now listen as He closes this lesson:  “And every one that heareth these words of mine, and doeth them not, shall be likened unto foolish man, who built his house upon the sand; and the rain descended, and floods came, and the winds blew, and smote upon that house; and it fell; and great was the fall thereof.”   It is a foolish man who would be so careless as to build his house in such a dangerous way that when the trial came in would fall.  How much more foolish is the man who would build his life in such a careless way that it would cost him his soul.

Jesus said:  Every one therefore that heareth these words of mine, and doeth them shall be likened unto a wise man.”  May we ever be wise enough, to know that there is a God, to put first things first, and always build our life upon His Word.
