Sennacherib was king of Assyria. In 2 Chronicles 32 we read about his interest in conquering Judah.
Hezekiah made some logistical preparations and then assured his men that God was on their side:
“With him is an arm of flesh; but with us is the LORD our God to help us, and to fight our battles. And the people rested themselves upon the words of Hezekiah king of Judah.” (2 Chronicles 32:8)
Sennacherib sent servants to Jerusalem with the intent of scaring the people. He essentially argued that no other gods had stopped him, and Judah’s God would not be able to stop him either.
“Know ye not what I and my fathers have done unto all the people of other lands? were the gods of the nations of those lands any ways able to deliver their lands out of mine hand? Who was there among all the gods of those nations that my fathers utterly destroyed, that could deliver his people out of mine hand, that your God should be able to deliver you out of mine hand? Now therefore let not Hezekiah deceive you, nor persuade you on this manner, neither yet believe him: for no god of any nation or kingdom was able to deliver his people out of mine hand, and out of the hand of my fathers: how much less shall your God deliver you out of mine hand?” (2 Chronicles 32:13-15)
Sennacherib’s flaw was in believing that the “God of Judah” was no different from the false gods whose people had been defeated. He lumped the true God in with the false gods. He knew that the false gods were powerless and presumed that Judah’s God was powerless also.
He was wrong.

Sennacherib never did conquer Judah. After an angel of the Lord ravaged Sennacherib’s forces he went home with shame. He entered the temple of his god and was killed by his own children. (see 2 Chronicles 32:21)
I mention Sennacherib because I see people making the same mistake Sennacherib did. They have what I’ve started calling “Sennacherib Syndrome.”
A representative example of Sennacherib Syndrome rests with many self-described atheists. They are able to see the flaws in the false gods that are revered in cultures throughout the world. They mock these obvious flaws. But then they consider the true and living God and lump him into that same category: “This God is no different from all those others…”
Their arrogance is similar to Sennacherib’s. We can hope that at least some will come to their senses before their life on earth is done.
I hope you’re having a great week!
