“Christian”, a word with a tremendous meaning.

“And the disciples were called Christians first in Antioch” (Acts 11:26)

What comes into your mind, what do you think when you hear the word “Christian”? Not all people have the same thing in mind when using this word. It often means one thing to one person and something entirely different to someone else. In the eyes of men today there are hyphenated “Christians” depending upon what particular religious body you happen to claim membership in. The bible knows no such thing. Again, today the name is applied to all religious people regardless of what they believe and practice. It is even applied to devout and conscientious people as opposed to someone who has no particular religious inclination. My friends all this is pure nonsense. Consider carefully the Athenians in Acts 17, Cornelius in Acts 10 and then diligently think upon the words of Hebrews 5:8-9, Mark 16:16 and Matthew 7:21. Anyone who calls himself/herself a Christian without having followed God’s instructions for becoming a Christian is only a pretender.

Used only three times in the bible (Acts 11:26, 26:28, 1 Peter 4:16), the word “Christian” speaks to a close relationship with Christ our Lord. Wearing the name Christian places us into the family of God where we live and work together with one heart and one soul. It is truly a most excellent, noble and majestic name by which to be known.

Being a Christian involves a host of things a few of which are:

Following God’s instructions Matthew 7:21, John 14:15
Studying God’s word 2 Tim. 2:15, Acts 17:11
Being a doer of that word Jas. 1:22-25, 1 Cor. 15:58
