This week the Supreme Court ruled that same sex couples have a legal right to marry and that states cannot deny them this right. As Christians we must be reminded that homosexuality is sin and not be deceived by changing social norms or the world’s definition of ‘love’. At the same time, hatred and unkindness has no place in the heart of a Christian and we must be careful not to be unjust and fall into other devices of Satan.
I’m not going to spend space in this article quoting passages that declare homosexuality a sin, but they are numerous and show God’s judgment in the OT and NT (Lev 20:13, 18:22, 24-30, 1 Cor. 6:9), and we have the example of Sodom and Gomorrah (Gen 13:12-13 and ch19). A more intriguing passage is found in Romans regarding God’s work in the hearts of those who refuse to acknowledge the truth about His deity and power. Paul said, “Because that, when they knew God, they glorified him not as God, neither were thankful; but became vain in their imaginations, and their foolish heart was darkened…Wherefore God also gave them up to uncleanness through the lusts of their own hearts, to dishonor their own bodies between themselves:” (Rom 1:21, 24) He goes on to describe specifically how they dishonored their own bodies after being given up by God, “For this cause God gave them up unto vile affections: for even their women did change the natural use into that which is against nature: And likewise also the men, leaving the natural use of the woman, burned in their lust one toward another; men with men working that which is unseemly, and receiving in themselves that recompense of their error which was meet” (v26-27). We are seeing not only the result of what happens when God gives someone up because of their hardheartedness, we’re also seeing those who are deceived by false science.
Paul warned Timothy of “science, falsely so called” (1Tim 6:20). It’s the same science that would have us believe there is no Creator, that would have us believe we were designed to live in sin. Isaiah’s lamented those who mixed up good and evil, “Woe unto them that call evil good, and good evil; that put darkness for light, and light for darkness; that put bitter for sweet, and sweet for bitter” (Isa 5:20). The Hebrew writer understood that spiritually strong meat is needed to distinguish between good and evil, “But strong meat belongeth to them that are of full age, even those who by reason of use have their senses exercised to discern both good and evil” (Heb. 5:14). We need to help those who are susceptible to being subverted by the many false teachings or social norms that call this evil good.

While this particular sin may seem more repulsive, God is no respecter of persons (Acts 10:34-45). He desires we love our enemies, bless those that curse us, “That ye may be the children of your Father which is in heaven: for he maketh his sun to rise on the evil and on the good, and sendeth rain on the just and on the unjust (Matt. 5:45). Let’s remember that we stand as lights in a dark world (Matt. 5:14, 16), and we should continue to sigh and cry for (all) the abominations that may surround us (Eze 9:4-5).
